Morphosis, 2-4-6-8 House, 1978 . "Our client, who served as the builder of this project, desired a room for privacy and meditation which could function for a broad range of activities. This studio was to be added onto a 1920's beach bungalow. . Because we wished to communicate with the client and were interested in the formal terms of the design of the house, we created a “Revell-like“ kit. This kit documented the project in a familiar format that could be understood by a layperson and could help to alleviate some of the fear and confusion inherent in undertaking such a formidable task. The kit contained two posters, which catalogued the building materials and described a basic step-by-step construction assembly. A pocket-sized set of working drawings served as the major means of communication with the client." . Fragment from the book "Morphosis Buildings and Projects", Rizzoli, New York 1989 . Rachel Whiteread, House, 1993 . Rachel Whiteread (1963) won the Turner Prize in 1993 for House, a temporary work that consisted on creating a concrete cast out of a Victorian house that was going to be demolished, the last one standing on the edge of a new public part, Wennington Green. Later, as she tore down the original walls that had served as the mold for the work, what remained was the empty space turned into matter, standing still in the middle of a street. . House worked in many levels. . After its completion on October 25th 1993, it created a highly controversial debate between art critics, politicians and the general public about contemporary art: its meaning, its value, its importance. Despite many efforts to the contrary, it was finally demolished on January 11th 1994. . On a more conceptual level, the work was a thought-provoking take on the idea of “home”. By turning space into a massive sculpture, and thus inverting the mass and void, House makes the space for life, the air between the walls of the rooms, visible, existent in itself; while at the same time making it completely uninhabitable. The house is much more “present” than it ever was, but it is not really a house. . More images and info in an old entry in aseriesofrooms.com . Eliel Saarinen, Interior drawings of Suur-Merijoki Manor, 1903 . In 1900, a trio of young Finnish architects (Eliel Saarinen, Herman Gesellius and Armas Lindgren) were hired to build a villa in the area of Viborg, then in Finland (now part of the Russian territory). . Saarinen's perspective drawings of the interiors show the great detail with which the house was projected, including made-to-measure furniture and textiles. It became one of the jewels of the Art Nouveau, and was broadly published at the time. It was destroyed during the war in the 1940s. . Edward Hopper, Room in New York, 1932 . Hopper’s paintings have the ability of precisely capturing instants of everyday life, sublimating the ordinary and the quietness. The women and men that populate his works often seem absorbed in their own thoughts and an atmosphere of melancholia surrounds them. . The architecture of the spaces represented establishes a clear separation between inside and outside: two different worlds visually united by the ever-present element of the window. From the outside in, the viewer voyeuristically observes the intimate lives of strangers. From the inside out, windows frame the surrounding landscape as a painting on the wall, but one in constant transformation. During the day, windows allow the sunlight in, creating abstract compositions on the walls and floor. At night, the interior light escapes the contained stage of domestic life and spreads into the surrounding darkness. . Caryatides in the Erechtheion, ca. 408 B.C. . Whether the six sculpted women that serve as columns in the southern porch of the Erechtheion temple in the Acropolis were simply inspired by young women dancing to goddess Artemis, by the supposed beauty and strength of the women of the city of Karyae or if, quite to the contrary, they represented the punishment to the women of said city, condemned to slavery after Karyae fell on the wrong side of a war, is a mystery that has fascinated many in the 2500 years since the building was erected. . After enduring countless wars and the pillage of one of its columns (among many other marbles of the temple), what finally took the sculpted pieces out of their original location was the air pollution of modern-day Athens. Between 1979 and 1987, the temple was thoroughly restored and many of the pieces were moved to a museum and replaced by copies. Despite that, the porched room is still captivating in its proportioned beauty and the strangeness of its concept. . More images in aseriesofrooms.com . HOTEL 0519 (Plan) 1/3: a courtyard boutique hotel in Cancun, Mexico. As it is customary in forbidden gardens, this eleven-room square structure is isolated from its surroundings by a 3-meter-high wall. A bridge over a moat provides an entrance to the hotel lobby. The moat (a pool) has direct access from the terraces of seven of the front rooms and three floating benches, with palm trees at their center, provide for a small pool refuge. A citrus tree grove claims the other half of the square. Restaurant and bar facilities occupy the center of the courtyard and a semi-covered pergola serves as a civic monument (events structure) in the rear of the grove © Jaime Correa, 2019 #architecture #rationalarchitecture #koozarch #archdaily #dezeen #critday #architizer #lovesdomus #the_best_new_architects #next_top_architects #nextarch #domusweb #urbandesign #artnexuscorp #portoacademy #aseriesofrooms #abitare_magazine #c_a_g_e #modern.architect #allmodern #malapartecafe #minimalism #mixedusedevelopment #call_to_order_carrie_penabad #conceptualarchitecture #axo_madness #boutiquehotel #hotel #unbuilt #phenomenology

Francesca Woodman, photograph from Angel Series, Roma, September 1977 . In Francesca Woodman’s photographs, body and space become entwined. Human figures (most often, the photographer herself) dissolve into the decaying surroundings, the trace of their movement captured by long exposure shots; disguise themselves with torn pieces of wallpaper or plastic wrap; hide between architectural elements to not reveal themselves entirely or, even when showing all their body, conceal their faces to remain somewhat anonymous. . Some of the photographs work almost as still lifes, animated bodies turned into one more object, while others appear as if part of a choreographed performance was captured in a picture and frozen in time. . Robert Montgomery, All Palaces Are Temporary Palaces, 2011 . Influenced by both the Situationists and Jenny Holzer, Robert Montgomery's works operate in an urban scale in various forms: from street ads covered with poems (guerrilla-style) to large installations of led-lit words. He uses the most literal form of communication, text, as the means to convey ideas, but more often than not, their true meaning is left open. . The work "All Palaces Are Temporary Palaces" has been installed in several cities since 2011, gaining new significances within every new context of place and time. It is mostly associated its installation in a former DDR-era East Berlin swimming pool, but it has temporarily been exhibited in Paris, Venice, Lyon, or Cardiff. In the British city it was placed in 2016 on top of a brutalist parking building from the seventies that was going to be demolished. In an interview on the occasion of the Cardiff opening he said: . "It gives it a kind of pathos when you see parts of the city, big chunks of the cities, being torn down and rebuilt to certain new development ideals. (...) The piece "All Palaces Are Temporary Palaces", it works really well in civic architecture, somehow, in buildings of a period that is gone. (...) It is about the temporariness of place, and also about the temporariness of privilege in a sense." . More images and info in aseriesofrooms.com . Albrecht Schäfer, Interieurs, 2010s . Albrecht Schäfer produced art installations and site-specific interventions before developing an interest in the more "archaic" medium of painting. . For the series "Interieurs", he built a model of his own studio and started observing and portraying what he saw. The resulting works offer a vast display of approaches, as the model is sometimes seen as an object or still life, while other times it becomes a container of spaces, where he studies the effect of light in the fabricated walls, floors and ceilings. . By focusing his attention on the model instead of the identical, 1:1 space that surrounds it, Schäfer's paintings have an abstract quality that is detached from the grainy detail of the human scale, even when in later paintings, Schäfer introduces a few objects scattered around the spaces: a table, boards leaning against the walls, or some rubbish on the floor. . Wilhelm Schürmann, Photographs, 1979-1981 . Photographer and art collector Wilhelm Schürmann's work from the period of 1979-1981 goes back to the street in Dortmund he had lived in as a child and portrays its everyday commonality in natural but precise compositions. The floral pattern of the wallpaper and the strict geometry of doors and kitchen appliances come together with ordinary, seemingly random objects such as calendars, boots, radio sets, or hangers. . Luigi Ghirri, Studio di Aldo Rossi, 1989-90 . Luigi Ghirri once wrote that Rossi’s works had helped him “clarify all the doubts and suspicions that I had long harboured about architectural photography” and that it contained “this miraculous balance between what we already know and expect from an architectural work and the sense of disorientation we experience when faced with something new”. . After weekends spent photographing the cemetery of Modena in solitude (which was still in construction at the time) and establishing a deep connection with its architecture, Ghirri and Rossi went on to collaborate in many occasions during the following decades. . In the late eighties, Ghirri captured the studio of Aldo Rossi in a series of images that, along with those taken in Giorgio Morandi’s Atelier, offer a glimpse into the private spaces of two of the most important Italian creatives of the time. . Oskar Schlemmer, Zwölf Figuren im Raum, 1930 . Oskar Schlemmer’s works revolve around the movement of the figure in space. Both in the ballet choreographies he produced as a Bauhaus professor and in his pictorial work, the abstraction of the morphology of the human figure and its relationship with its surrounding space are central. The paintings produced during the 1920s and 30s, depict a series of human figures arranged in precise compositions that recall staged scenographies. . More images in aseriesofrooms.com . Ross Taylor, Illustrations, 2010s . Ross Taylor’s pencil illustrations depict scenes infused with saturated colour and a complex spatial construction. . “Ross Taylor blends historical references, contemporary documentation and improvisation in his work. His work is process-driven and rich with interior and exterior character. Taylor’s process involves drawing imagery (line) onto the paper, invisibly at first, working over it later with coloured pencils. This transforms the intention and the accuracy of the original image while simultaneously revealing it as white lines within the overlaid drawing. The indented original line remains a form of blind scaffolding, around which the final composition must stand. The outcome both subsumes its initiation and reveals it on its surface.” (Excerpt from Sophie Gannon Gallery) . More images in aseriesofrooms.com . Philippe Weisbecker, Camping, 2001-2003 . Philippe Weisbecker studied Decorative Arts in Paris, was a graphic designer in Tunisia, later moved to New York where he worked as an interior designer for some time, before starting to get commissions to do illustrations for magazines and newspapers such as Esquire, The New York Times or The Village Voice. While doing his own uncommissioned work, he was first attracted to painting, but in the late 1990s he went back to pencils, rulers, paper, and the pleasure of drawing. He has created a very particular style of seemingly rigid straight lines that create distorted perspectives filled with simple colours. . Despite never having gone camping, when a friend of his recommended looking into camping equipment, he dived into it: . “I went to stores, looked at catalogs and, sure enough, found what inspired me: Inflatable mattresses, folding tents, collapsible tables, pan-size gas burners, and all sorts of different equipment corresponding to my taste for simple things. Naturally, later I expanded my resources to campers, trailers and mobile homes (half trucks/half houses), the perfect combination of two of my favourite subjects.” . Tigerman-McCurry, Van Straaten Gallery, 1983 . From the architects’ website: . This low cost transformation of 8,000 square feet of a factory building into an art gallery involved the design decision to forgo structural expressionism by encasing the closely spaced knee-braced posts of the existing structural system in thick walls which in turn created rooms for the display of art. These rooms were classically organized into a processional, spatial system with circulation on both the axis and cross axis. Reference to the sequential planning of traditional museum spaces was intentional, but the size was proportionately reduced to signify the scale of a gallery. . “Once seen, the little drawing of the space seems almost inevitable. How could any other drawing record so perfectly the syncopated series of spaces? The simplicity of the drawings, the minimal means – black ink and Zipatone – make this sheet so clear and precise it seems almost surreal, a quality greatly enhanced by the seemingly diminutive scale and random placement of openings. How mysterious a world is created with such economy. This is the kind of drawing that transcends its function of describing a space and justifies the exhibition of architectural drawings in a museum of fine arts.” — Bob Bruegmann, Inland Architect, May 1983 . #aseriesofrooms #documentingspace #stanleytigerman #margaretmccurry #tigermanmccurry #architecture #architecturedrawing

Zsofia Schweger, Off the Map II, 2016 . In her series of collages “Off the Map”, artist Zsofia Schweger explores the concept of a journey that is at once limited by the physical walls of her own room, and at the same time capable of spanning the entirety of the world. . Pairing a room (reduced to a series of shapes) with maps (which are, in the end, an abstraction of places turned into lines and words), Schweger creates postcard-sized collages infused with the vibrant colours of places known and unknown. . Each of the three series produced between 2013 and 2017 repeats a particular point of view, but each of the individual works depicts a different journey and a different story. . In her own words: "Believing that being at home was newsworthy, I set out to create postcards made of old historical world maps. (…) Despite the collages’ modest size, with fractions of the maps clearly preserved and readable, I aimed to indicate scale, distance, and depth: an image of a room could contain the whole world.” . #Repost @aseriesofrooms (via Letterina n. 520) · · · Louise Bourgeois, Femme-Maison, 1947 . Louise Bourgeois’ series of paintings and prints Femme-Maison, produced between 1946 and 1947, present women naked, their identities concealed behind houses that hide their faces. . Bourgeois, then mainly a housewife and mother of three operating on the fringes of the art society and not the powerful juggernaut she is considered to be today, always viewed the process of making art as “giving tangible form, and thus exorcising, gripping subconscious states of being”. . In these works, she is portraying her frustration over women’s (and her own) place in society as nothing more than the domestic housewife: a body to be disposed of (hence the visible genitalia) with no identity of her own beyond that of the house she occupies. The idea of “home” is seen both as a place to hide and as a prison. On one hand, it takes away the need to present oneself to the world as an individual mind. On the other, it prevents this fact from ever taking place. . More images and info in aseriesofrooms.com . Anke Becker, Economic Words, 2012-ongoing . German artist Anke Becker’s ongoing series “Economic Words” isolates words of Financial Times’ newspaper articles to create new stories with little to no resemblance to the original writing. . The results are both abstract compositions of black ink on salmon pink paper and “calligrammes” in which the randomly placed words stand out to create a meaning of its own. . With over one thousand examples to be found on the specific website for these works, a few deal with the intimacy of being at home. . While his notebook sketches portray intimate observations of everyday life; his larger scale, often-commissioned illustrations broaden the scope to contain whole buildings and parts of the city, and all of the lives in them. Three building materials add variety and locational strategies for the sake of perceptual ease: brick on the corners of the project, red stucco at its center, and concrete buildings everywhere else © Jaime Correa, 2019 #u_soa #architecture #rationalarchitecture #koozarch #archdaily #dezeen #critday #architizer #lovesdomus #the_best_new_architects #next_top_architects #nextarch #theopenworkshop #domusweb #urbandesign #artnexuscorp #portoacademy #aseriesofrooms #abitare_magazine #c_a_g_e #modern.architect #allmodern #malapartecafe #minimalism #mixedusedevelopment #call_to_order_carrie_penabad #conceptualarchitecture #axo_madness

@u_soa Faculty member @jaimecorrea0919 | ZIGGURAT (Unit Axonometric) 3/5: each block contains two buildings facing a grove of citrus trees with a long bench completing the overall composition of the central square. Each building has retail uses on the ground floor, offices above, apartments on the top two floors, and a system of open-air terraces for local food/energy production © Jaime Correa, 2019 #u_soa #architecture #rationalarchitecture #koozarch #archdaily #dezeen #critday #architizer #lovesdomus #the_best_new_architects #next_top_architects #nextarch #theopenworkshop #domusweb #urbandesign #artnexuscorp #portoacademy #aseriesofrooms #abitare_magazine #c_a_g_e #modern.architect #allmodern #malapartecafe #minimalism #mixedusedevelopment #call_to_order_carrie_penabad #conceptualarchitecture #axo_madness

@u_soa Faculty member @jaimecorrea0919 | ZIGGURAT (Unit Plan) 4/5: the top two floors of each building are occupied by small apartments. These apartments can be accessed via a cascading system of stairs or by an internal elevator in the center of each building. Like Mayan pyramids, the apartment units would be perceived as raising units over the top of the proposed citrus tree canopies © Jaime Correa, 2019 #u_soa #architecture #rationalarchitecture #koozarch #archdaily #dezeen #critday #architizer #lovesdomus #the_best_new_architects #next_top_architects #nextarch #theopenworkshop #domusweb #urbandesign #artnexuscorp #portoacademy #aseriesofrooms #abitare_magazine #c_a_g_e #modern.architect #allmodern #malapartecafe #minimalism #mixedusedevelopment #call_to_order_carrie_penabad #conceptualarchitecture #axo_madness
