President @realdonaldtrump on Tuesday falsely accused The Washington Post of being a “Russian asset.” The baseless claim was made by Trump to defend Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Reporters asked Trump outside the White House to respond to a Post opinion piece published Friday under the headline, “Mitch McConnell is a Russian asset.” “The Washington Post called Mitch McConnell what?” Trump asked. “I think The Washington Post is a Russian asset by comparison.” The article, written by columnist Dana Milbank, criticized McConnell for blocking legislation to secure U.S. election systems against attacks by Russia or other foreign agents. Milbank wrote that by refusing to defend America against future attacks, McConnell was “doing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s bidding.” #trump

President Trump abruptly ended a meeting with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Wednesday, saying he was unable to work with them on legislation following comments by Pelosi that he was “engaged in a coverup.” Trump made an unscheduled appearance in the Rose Garden shortly afterward and in a meandering 10-minute address said he had left the meeting at which they were supposed to talk about working together on a $2 billion infrastructure plan. “Instead of walking in happily to a meeting, I walk in to look at people who said I was doing a coverup,” Trump said. Pelosi made her comments earlier Wednesday morning. Speaking to reporters shortly after Trump’s appearance in the Rose Garden, Pelosi and Schumer said they were taken aback by Trump’s behavior. “To watch what happened in the White House would make your jaw drop,” Schumer said. Trump was visibly angry when he arrived in the Cabinet room about 15 minutes late to meet with Pelosi and Schumer, people familiar with what transpired told The Post. Trump did not shake hands or sit down, and after accusing Pelosi of saying something “terrible,” he headed out without allowing time for a response. @realdonaldtrump departing the @whitehouse yesterday. Special counsel Robert S. Mueller III has concluded his investigation without charging any Americans with conspiring with Russia to interfere in the 2016 campaign and help elect Donald Trump. But hundreds of pages of legal filings and independent reporting since Mueller was appointed nearly two years ago have painted a striking portrayal of a presidential campaign that appeared untroubled by a foreign adversary’s attack on the U.S. political system — and eager to accept the help. Even after taking office, Trump has been hesitant to condemn Russia’s actions, instead calling the investigation a “witch hunt” and denouncing the work of federal investigators seeking to understand a Russian attack on the country he leads. See more in today’s Instagram story! Arizona Border. U.S. Border Patrol Agent Daniel Hernandez spotted a youth alone under a juniper tree, dressed as if he were headed to church. When the agent approached, the boy quickly surrendered. “Are you afraid?” Hernandez asked in Spanish. The youth nodded and said his name was Marco and that he was from Guatemala. Well over half the people taken into custody in recent months have been parents and children, with hundreds surrendering at a time, often in isolated locations. In other cases, youths such as Marco are dropped off by themselves. More than 1,800 Central American parents and children, a record high, crossed illegally last week on the day Trump went to El Paso to tout the need for a border wall. #border #borderwall #politics #immigration #mexico #trump

For more please see the Instagram story. Vicki Ibarra, 45, had built her adult life on the principle of self-sufficiency — raising two children by herself, adopting her teenage niece, devoting her career to a government job because it promised meaningful work and 9-to-5 dependability. Her salary was modest at about $35,000 a year, so she often stayed late to work overtime. Even when her credit cards were maxed out, she’d been able to make at least the minimum payments. But when the government shutdown at 12:01 a.m. on Dec. 22, everything changed. It forced her to miss one paycheck and then another, leaving her with no income for the first time since she turned 18. The result was a missed car payment, which forced her lease into default because she was already behind. Next was her cable bill. Then came two unpaid credit cards bills and a rent check that was almost three weeks overdue. When the federal government had finally called her back to work after 35 days, she wondered how she could afford to get there. Now another potential shutdown is just days away.
