It became so sadly apparent the effects of the Easter attacks has had in Sri Lanka after speaking locals and expats alike during our time there. After the turmoil of the civil wars for decades, and the tragedy of the 2004 tsunami the country was rebuilding itself and starting to thrive. For example, small individual fruit & veg sellers who would provide for a couple of locals, now had 5 stalls and employees of their own thanks to tourism; but in one day, one disturbing, evil act of terrorism, those employees have lost their jobs, they are fighting to feed their own, guest houses have closed down, essential maintenance works around the island have ceased and families can’t afford to send their children to school anymore. It was heart wrenching to witness first hand.
We were more often than not the only people in our guesthouse and the only full table out of 20 empty in restaurants!
At least 5000 flights and holidays were cancelled after that day for 2019.
This beautiful country has SO MUCH to offer, it’s a haven. I’m glad we came here; everyone we encountered were so humble and grateful, always with the biggest smile on their face. Some of the most genuine, friendly people we have had the pleasure of meeting! So strong & resilient.
I hope people do start to return and the country can start to thrive again! You won’t be disappointed! We will come back for sure!🇱🇰🧡 .
