This inhabitable sculpture by Wendell Castle was created for an exhibition called “Contemplation Environments,” held at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in 1970. He approached it with complete artistic license, essentially providing a sculpture, albeit one that visitors could crawl into. Depending on one’s point of view, the “Environment for Contemplation” could come off as a spiritual vehicle to a higher plane, or a humorous send-up of that very idea. It is both cartoonish and profound, a thought bubble and a hand-crafted monument. In its contradictions, it seems to encapsulate countercultural America at the dawn of the 1970s. Today, it stands as the ultimate demonstration of Castle’s imagination, a creative mind without boundaries. - Text by @glenn_adamson ⠀ This piece is on view at @friedman_benda in “Wendell Castle: A New Vocabulary” - through October 12, 2019. #WendellCastle ⠀ Photography by @timothydoyon #Repost 📷: @friedman_benda

After seeing the Wendell Castle show at the @friedman_benda Gallery last week, I've been thinking about working along side of him in the early 70s. It was just the two of us, master and apprentice, making pieces every day under a 1972 Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant. Only two were awarded that year. We created a boatload of work, became friends and remained so for the next forty-plus years. #wendellcastle #tiffanyfoundation #apprenticeship #grant #wood #furniture #design #sculpture #drawing #makingart #friends #MoMAartists

This piece is titled: “Let’s talk about it.” An art furniture bookcase made of MDF, plywood, poplar, oak, pine, wisteria, vine, styrofoam, Amazon bubble envelope, concrete form tube, laundry rope, aqua blue bridesmaid dress, two books, duct tape, plastic wrap, silicone mannequin head, and human hair. I’ll take studio photos of it later and some parts need to be sanded but for now I sleep! 😴 . . . . . . . . . . #artfurniture #furnituredesign #art #woodworking #bookcase #avantgarde #trash #wendellcastle #whartonescherick #whartonescherickwouldhateme #woodgang #ganggang

These are pieces in a current Chelsea show that is important to me: 'Wendell Castle: A New Vocabulary,' at Friedman Benda. Castle was my sculpture / furniture design mentor under a 1972 Tiffany Apprenticeship Grant. 1) One of his last carved maquettes in a 60 year career. 2) One of his earliest carved walnut pieces, 1958. 3) 60s and 70s work before I met him. We made about 100 of his pieces together... Miss the guy... #wendellcastle #anewvocabulary #1972 #apprenticeship #mentor #master #friedmanbenda #515w26th #nyc #to12oct

Wendell Castle: A New Vocabulary at Friedman Benda Gallery in Chelsea offers the first posthumous retrospective of the late American designer’s expansive career. A vanguard of furniture design and sculpture from the 1960s until his death in 2018, Castle developed alternative forms of working with wood and bronze. Most significantly, he invented stack lamination as a way to combine woods, as seen in Wide Awake, 2011, pictured above. Increasingly incorporating bronze in his later years, Castle’s later works both hearken back to the experimental aspirations of his early wood sculptures, while forging new visual vocabularies using cutting edge technologies and mechanisms of production. | #wendellcastle at @friedman_benda at 515 W 26th street through 12 | 1. Wendell Castle (1932-2018) • • He created unique pieces of handmade sculpture and furniture for over four decades. • • Since the outset of his career, Castle consistently challenged the traditional boundaries of functional design and established himself as the father of the American studio furniture movement. • • Castle was renowned for his superb craftsmanship, his whimsically organic forms and his development of original techniques for shaping solid, stack-laminated wood. • #master #woodfurniture #designer #sculpture #wendellcastle #inspiration #needthis #loveart #wood #handmade @wendellcastlecollection

Before #wendellcastle left us for that great big wood shop in the sky, he was restoring a #nashhealey very similar to this. With only 104 produced for 1951, perhaps this was his car?

My dad couldn't have asked for a better ambassador than Archibald, his only male descendent. And Archie couldn't be more proud of his grandfather. As a kid I lived with the Environment for Contemplation (1970) in my house and I'm pretty sure nobody has spent more time inside of it than I. Last night I had the chance to sit inside of it for the first time in many years and to introduce Archie to its magic. The smell of the interior—sheepskin and wood and ?— is still the same and brought with it a powerful wave of nostalgia. Thank you, Dad, wherever you are. And thank you, Marc, for putting together this incredible show. @friedman_benda #wendellcastle #artfurniture

At @friedman_benda through October 19th, “Wendell Castle: A New Vocabulary” examines the parallel themes in the early and late work of the pioneering furniture designer. Shown in the foreground is “Lazy Bones” of 2017, a powerful piece made the year before Castle died, still brimming with ideas, at age 85. #friedmanbenda #wendellcastle

Every generation is a reaction to the former. I think #WendellCastle created in reaction to the serious, formalistic, German Bauhaus designs, pioneering instead into the fantastical play of imagination. Objects like chairs and tables became anthropomorphic in abstracted characters. . In a time where Hope is needed most, Castle’s inventive works remind viewers of a world beyond this one - One that is wild and unbound and free! . These critical works were created in the last decade of his career, after a lifetime of experimentation. #friemanbenda #design #chelseaopenings

That he did so in the seemingly restrictive context of furniture design makes his achievement all the more remarkable. One testament to Wendell Castle’s generative approach to design is the way that he would revisit his own compositions. For his “Misfit” series—numbering about a dozen works in total—he would go further, cutting existing models apart, twisting them round and rejoining them in various combinations, even putting together halves from two different seats. This is the case with Motown, arguably the most successful of these works, which makes clear the sly conceptual implications of this seeming simple idea. Out of two designs generated at separate times, Castle has created a single fusion. This is entirely in keeping with his precept that one should never accept things as they are. - Text by @glenn_adamson “Motown,” 2016 will be included in Friedman Benda’s upcoming exhibition “Wendell Castle: A New Vocabulary” - on view from September 5 - October 12, 2019. #WendellCastle

The restlessly imaginative Wendell Castle only rarely made the same object twice. An exception is seen in these two small mirrors. Though perfectly matched to one another, each is wonderfully wayward in its lines, with an asymmetrical cloudlike silhouette and propulsive carving in depth – an oscillating, rhythmic approach also seen in his fiberglass lamps of this period. The mirrors are pure and condensed specimens of the organic sensibility he had perfected by this point in his career. - Text by @glenn_adamson “Mirrors,” 1972 will be included in Friedman Benda’s upcoming exhibition “Wendell Castle: A New Vocabulary” - on view from September 5 - October 12, 2019. #WendellCastle
