Find out more about the mysterious maker of this totemic head sculpture. Outsider artist, sculptor and shipbuilder, Paul Jencik. Active 1990s in Melbourne’s western suburbs. He went unnoticed on the fringes of the art scene. A crying shame. See link in bio for his story.

Heroic Gestures in American Craft. While on a road trip to visit a client yesterday, I stopped at one of my favorite bookstores, @titcombsbookshop in East Sandwich, MA. On the top floor are boxes of indexed Life Magazines. Proustian memories of thumbing through National Geographics in the early 1980s at a used bookstore with my dad, looking for articles on Finland for a school project. A light bulb goes off. What if they have *the* Life issue on American craft? They have two copies of July 29, 1966. I purchase them both for $7.50 each, one for my library and one for our gallery's #RArchives. Swipe for a few highlights- - 1. Wendell Castle sporting an Amish beard, polishing the iconic form which helped launch his career two years earlier- - 2. The lede and undeniable star is Lenore Tawney- - 3. Peter Voulkos was a master of posing contrapposto, all sweat and muscles- - 4. Paul Evans looks a bit uncertain. Notice he is wearing the helmet of Dorsey Redding, his longtime studio manager. Perhaps he wasn't doing too much of the work himself- - 5. Cover detail. The lead story is Loudon Wainright's investigation of the serial killer Richard Speck. The fingertips are not mine, but are part of the photograph by Art Shay- - Thirteen artists are profiled in the article. It is my favorite period survey of the #ObjectsUSA generation, hands down. The photographs pretty much fall into gendered categories. The women are seductive weavers of webs, the men are noble toilers. Everyone is hard at work. But the overall thesis is that "Unlike the old-time backwoods quilt makers and bird whittlers, today's craftsmen are sophisticated and trained artisans." - - I could have easily purchased these magazines online. But nothing is more thrilling than finding archival treasures the old fashioned way- - #wendellcastle #lenoretawney #petervoulkos #paulevans

#stylishsunnies - by #ninaricci circa #1970 (yay!) - spotted at the @adam.designmuseum in #brussels. Were they emulating a #butterfly , albeit a grey one, we wonder? They’re part of the #plasticarium collection initiated by #philippedecelle in 1987 after he gallantly rescued a #joecolombo #universalechair from a dustbin. His collection of plastic furniture, designed by everyone from #vernerpanton and #alexanderbegge to #wendellcastle , plus fashion and art made of plastic, was acquired by the #designmuseum in #2014. We recently visited it and discovered that the Plasticarium was much bigger than we expected. #plasticfantastic #plasticdesign #popdesign #popfashion #1970sfashion #1970sstyle #glamgoggles #shadesofgrey #courreges #tomwesselmann #sunglasses

. 💖✨💖✨💖 Thank you✨ Repost @surfacemag When asked about her favorite American designs, @gullajonsdottir immediately thought of the late #WendellCastle. “He was a sculptor who chose furniture as his medium of functional art. This resonates with my belief of creating architecture and design in voluptuous forms. As there are no straight lines in the body, my art reflects this beautiful form. When I see Castle’s work, his curves and sensual lines becomes the microcosm of the lines in the human body.” #americandesign #gullajonsdottir . . . 📣 @choi_seung_hyun_tttop 〰️💚 “About the curve of his work” Is this your comment!?💞 I thought that🤗 You feel a truly wonderful view of the world💓

Not a fluke: Just into the shop is this unusual, sculptural studio furniture chair in carved cherry with whale 🐳 fluke back, made in California, circa 1975 as a prototype by Hunter Studios. Nautical, sort of, but not cute or predictable. I love how organic and biomorphic its form is. Height: 30” Width: 18” Depth: 16”. Summer Show Special: Wendell Castle, Morning Sun (silver), 2009. Though it was made over fifty years into Wendell Castle’s career, this seating sculpture has the urgent excitement of a new discovery. In 2009, he was just beginning to turn his attention back to ideas he’d pursued in the first half of his career, taking the volumes and contours of his early works as sources of inspiration. Armed with superior technology and - more importantly - the deep skills and wisdom he’d acquired, he literally reinvented himself, staging one of the great final acts in design history. In the case of “Morning Sun,” he uses fiberglass (recalling the injection molded plastic that he pioneered in American furniture design) as well as metal leaf, which he had experimented with occasionally on wood surfaces in the 1960s. With its high-curving, fender-like sides and relatively short back, the work has the low-slung energy of a classic race car. This September, Castle’s work will be featured in a solo exhibition at Friedman Benda; his sixth monographic exhibition with the gallery. There have been many museum exhibitions about this great designer, most recently in 2018 in concurrent exhibitions in Kansas City: “Shifting Vocabularies” at @nelsonatkins and “Progression” at the @nermanmuseum. - Text by @glenn_adamson Photography by @timothydoyon & @millotadrien

"The Veiled Nun" by Giuseppe Croff 1863. It always amazes me that there is more to see at the National Gallery no matter how many time you have visited. The ability to create the illusion of a transparent veil in marble is memorizing. It immediately reminded me of the Wendell Castle Ghost Clock. #nationalgallery #sculpture #wendellcastle
